FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 22, 2000
Fort Fraser Chamber of Commerce Signs On Burns Lake, B.C. – On November 18, 2000 the Nechako Watershed Council (NWC) welcomed the Fort Fraser Chamber of Commerce as its newest member organization, represented by John Mawry. This brings the total membership of the NWC to 25 organizations, up 7 from the 18 that signed the terms of reference on June 28, 1998. The two day meeting, November 17 and 18, was opened by Mayor Paul Jean of Burns Lake who welcomed the NWC and congratulated the participants on their dedication and work surrounding the interests of the Nechako Valley Watershed. Alcan’s Director of Corporate Affairs for B.C., Richard Prokopanko and Mike Robertson, Senior Policy Advisor with the Cheslatta Carrier Nation reported on their meetings with five federal departments held in Ottawa on October 23rd and 24th, 2000. During the course of these meetings the NWC was introduced along with the recommendation of a water release facility at Kenney Dam. “Being able to get information about the NWC and the work that we are doing to the federal government via a member organization is key to the success of our Council. This demonstrates the commitment our members have to the NWC and when this is partnered with First Nations it broadens a strong message of credibility for the NWC process,” said Henry Klassen, Chair. This meeting focussed on bringing together the NWC’s work over the past two and one half years to culminate into a final recommendation for the three-member Management Committee of the Nechako Environmental Enhancement Fund (NEEF). Building on its first and second interim reports the NWC will recommend that a WRF at Kenney Dam is the best use of NEEF funds to provide for the downstream enhancement of the Nechako Watershed. The next meeting of the NWC will be in Smithers, B.C. in late January 2001. For further information, please contact: Henry Klassen 250-567-4254
