FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 9, 2001

Smithers, B.C. – The first Nechako Watershed Council (NWC) meeting of 2001 was held in Smithers, B.C. on February 2nd and 3rd.   The meeting was well attended by member organizations from Kitimat to Prince George.  Observers from throughout the Nechako Watershed region were also in attendance.

In its continued work of recommending and gaining support for a water release facility built at Kenney Dam, the NWC is sending a six member delegation to Ottawa on February 27 and 28, 2001 to discuss this facility with several federal cabinet ministers.  The six-person team represents the diverse views and values that make up the NWC, including local community interests, government at all levels, First Nations interests and the industrial sector.  Meetings have been confirmed with Minister Anderson, Environment Canada and the representatives of the offices of Minister Goodale, Natural Resources Canada and Minister Nault, Indian and Northern Affairs.

The NWC also discussed the current status of the Nechako Reservoir with a presentation by Alcan.  This presentation was the first in a series of public meetings, held by Alcan, regarding the operations of the Nechako Reservoir, the current weather including snow pack, reservoir level and the possible dredging of Tahtsa Narrows.  This is one of the potential solutions to overcoming the lower than average water level of the reservoir.  NWC members were able to gain a better understanding of reservoir management and its challenges.

Kathy Hoesing, representing the Tweedsmuir Recreation Commission, also provided valuable information on the concerns southside residents have with regard to how low reservoir levels affect such things as the environment and water quality.

The NWC is also very appreciative of the $21,000 that the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks donated towards the continued work of the NWC.

The next meeting of the NWC will be held on March 9 and 10, 2001 in Smithers, B.C.
