FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 20, 2002 Fort Fraser, B.C. - The fifth meeting of the Nechako Watershed Council (NWC) for the year 2002 was held in Fort Fraser on September 13 and 14, 2002. Regional District representative Ralph Roy welcomed the NWC on behalf of the community. With the Government of British Columbia committing funding for three years to develop Phase 1 of the NWC Workplan and Alcan matching the contributions the Nechako Enhancement Society (NES) was created and presented to the NWC on June 14, 2002. The NES was pleased to return to the NWC table at this meeting to provide an update on the progress that it has made to date on the Cold Water Release Facility Workplan (workplan). Environmental Dynamics Inc. has been contracted to act as project manager to see the year one activities progress to completion. David Hamilton, Environmental Dynamics Inc., with assistance from Dave Read, Aspen Communications and Dan Rodgers, Denis & Muntener Advertising, gave a presentation on the history and background of their respective companies and also provided a solid outline of how the year one activities of the workplan will unfold and be accomplished within the timeline of the workplan. “The NWC is looking forward to continuing to work with the NES and now Environmental Dynamics Inc. on getting the activities as laid out in the Cold Water Release Facility Workplan completed,” said Henry Klassen, Chair of the NWC. Reflecting on the NWC accomplishments over the last four years: · Increased membership · Resuming the processing of irrigation license applications on the Nechako River · The Nechako Environmental Enhancement Fund Management Committee released its report on June 7, 2001 recommending the construction of a cold water release facility at Kenney Dam · Development of the NWC Cold Water Release Facility Workplan and its acceptance by the Government of British Columbia · Creation of the Nechako Enhancement Society to receive funding for the workplan The NWC has established a working committee within its membership to analyze how the NWC will move forward to continue addressing the many interests of the stakeholders of the Nechako Watershed.
