WATERSHED COUNCIL MARKS TWO YEARS OF COOPERATION

After two years of cooperation the Nechako Watershed Council is looking towards the future. Representatives of the various facets of the council attended a barbecue at Riverside Park in Friday evening's cold rain to celebrate the council's second anniversary and to reconfirm their commitment to the future of the Nechako River. "I understand the challenges that you all have before you, Vanderhoof Mayor Len Fox told the gathering. "However, you must do the best you can to mitigate the damage of the post-Kenney Dam days. A tall order, but I'm sure you're all up to it." A letter from B.C.'s Minister of Finance and Corporate Relations, Paul Ramsey, thanked the council for two years of hard work and the vital role they have in bringing all interested parties together and allowing them to discuss the future of the river. "As Minister responsible for the British Columbia/Alcan agreement, I am a strong supporter of the Nechako Watershed Council," Ramsey wrote. "I look forward to continuing to work with you as we move towards some exciting decisons about the future of the Nechako River." Carl Whicher was on hand to represent Kitimat's Mayor at the celebration. "Thanks to all members for the hard work, the good work, the long work," he said. "Kitimat is very much commited to this process." Watershed Council members planted a May Day tree, the first of eight to be planted in Riverside Park by the council. And celebrants huddled away from the rain and enjoyed some cowboy poetry from Wilbur Pond and Barb Erikson. Council president Henry Klassen told the gathering that the process was important to making sure everybody enjoys the full potential of the Nechako River. "It's the communities that we represent that need to make the decisions," he said, "It's very important for all the people of the Northwest to be involved." And while the council acknowledges that progress on the sensitive issues surrounding the river has been slow, said Klassen, "We're celebrating our continued commitment to working together until this is in fact solved."
