Nechako Watershed Council Increases Membership and refines NEEF presentation at first NWC meeting in Terrace

(Terrace, BC) Mayor Jack Talstra welcomed the Nechako Watershed Council (NWC) to Terrace at their November 26 & 27 meeting by commenting on the important role that organizations such as the NWC can play in enhancing the economic and environmental sustainability of northern communities.

The meeting was highlighted by the acceptance of the Vanderhoof Rotary Club as the newest member of the NWC, bringing the total number of member organizations to 23.

"Our objective has been to welcome new members to the Council and ensure the widest possible representation in the Nechako Watershed," stated Council Chair, Henry Klassen. "The Vanderhoof Rotary Club represents a wide range of community and business leaders who -- without a shadow of a doubt – will add significant value and input to the future of the NWC."

As the November meeting was the first since the October Nechako Environmental Enhancement Fund (NEEF) Workshop and Open House, Council members agreed that the most effective approach to the Fund will be to review and refine the presentation of issues that are of interest and then determine which funding alternatives, such as a water release facility, would best meet these interests. A sub-committee of the Council was charged with conducting this review and assessing the enhancement options.

Wally Eamer, Regional Director of BC Environment, Prince George, provided an update on the approval of irrigation licenses demonstrating the success of the NWC in facilitating the resolution of local issues. Mr. Eamer stated that the Ministry has issued four new water licenses this year on the Nechako River middle reach – between the Nautley and Stuart – totaling 959,000 m3 of water. At the same time, a review of existing licensed use has resulted in agreements to date for the abandonment of 596,000 m of water that was previously licensed.

The next meeting of the NWC is scheduled for January 21 – 23 and will be at the Cheslatta Carrier Nation Band Office in Grassy Plains.
