Fraser Lake, BC – On October 24, 2003, Mayor Bob Thon opened the Nechako Watershed Council (NWC) meeting by welcoming everyone to Fraser Lake and thanking the NWC for continuing its work to ensure the long term health of the Nechako River and Watershed. Since the release of the Nechako Environmental Enhancement Fund Management Committee report recommended a cold water release facility CWRF) be constructed at Kenney Dam the NWC has been working on possible scenarios for Nechako River flow regimes post-CWRF. The NWC is taking into account the many interests of stakeholders who live in, work by and enjoy the Nechako Watershed. A Nechako Downstream Allocation Model was created to assist the NWC in simulating flow regimes. To verify the credibility of the simulation model, the NWC contracted the services of Mr. Adam Lewis with Ecofish Research Ltd. to conduct a review of the model. “Mr. Lewis was able to confirm that the simulation model the NWC has been using in developing proposed flow regimes is giving us reliable results,” said Henry Klassen, Chair, “Recommendations for improvement were also made that will enhance the model’s performance measures.” The Nechako Enhancement Society, established in 2002 to advance the Proposed Workplan for a Cold Water Release Facility at Kenney Dam, announced that the year two activities contract was awarded to Triton Environmental Consultants Ltd. Triton will be working on studying Fish Entrainment at Kenney Dam, Release Water Temperature Criteria and Total Gas Pressure. Guests at the meeting were Adam Lewis, Ecofish Research Ltd., Clyde Mitchell, Triton Environmental Consultants Ltd., Bob Thon, Mayor of Fraser Lake, June Wood, Nechako River Alliance. Our next meeting will be held in Smithers, BC on January 16, 2004. For further information contact: Henry Klassen Chair (250) 567-4254 |
