 NWC Nominated for Sustainability Award

Smithers, B.C. – The Nechako Watershed Council (NWC) wrapped up 2002 with a meeting in Smithers on November 22nd and 23rd.  The NWC members were pleased to receive the news that their organization has been nominated for a Fraser Basin Council 2002 Sustainability Award in the category of Overall Sustainability.

"This is a special honour for the NWC.  Being nominated for this award recognizes the hardwork and accomplishments that the NWC has achieved since its inception in June of 1998,” said Henry Klassen, Chair.

The Fraser Basin Council (FBC) launched the Sustainability Awards in 1998 to recognize and raise awareness of outstanding achievements by individuals and organizations toward the sustainability of the Fraser River Basin and its tributaries.  Winners will be announced on January 25, 2003 at the FBC’s annual conference.  A delegation from the NWC will travel to Richmond, B.C. to participate in the conference.

Louise Remillard and Dave Dhaliwal, both with Alcan’s Kitimat Works, provided the council with a presentation on reservoir management.  The information received will assist the NWC with its ongoing work for an optimal flow regime for the Nechako River post construction of a cold water release facility at Kenney Dam.

The Nechako River White Sturgeon Recovery Initiative team has been working to develop a plan to enhance the population of white sturgeon in the Nechako River.  Don Cadden, Section Head, Fish & Wildlife Science and Allocation, gave the NWC a comprehensive dissertation of where the team is at and what work they hope to accomplish in the future.  Critical to the team is to determine why the sturgeon are not spawning.

Guests at this meeting included Jason Hwang, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Justus Benckhuysen, Aquatic Resources and Dave Hamilton, Environmental Dynamics Inc.

The next meeting will be held in Smithers, B.C. on February 28, and March 1, 2003.
