PRESS RELEASE

January 23, 2004                                                                                  For Immediate Release

Smithers, B.C. – On January 16, 2004 the Nechako Watershed Council (NWC) met in Smithers, B.C., to continue its valuable work “to enhance the long-term health and viability of the Nechako Watershed with consideration for all interests, and to provide a forum to address water management and related issues in the Watershed and to work toward cooperative resolution of these issues.”

Since its inception in June 1998, the NWC has conducted field trips, commissioned various studies and worked diligently with interested parties to ensure that as many different views and values can be considered with relation to the environmental, economic and social well-being of the Nechako Watershed.  Important parties to this work are the decision makers from both the provincial and federal level.  The Province of British Columbia has been a member organization from 1998 and most recently the Nechako White Sturgeon Recovery Initiative and the Nechako Fisheries Conservation Program have made a commitment to come to the NWC table as observers and consultative participants.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada has also restated to the NWC that they are always willing to discuss and/or make presentations on their work in the watershed.

Having provincial and federal participation at our meetings, along with member organizations, provides a sharing of information that could otherwise not happen.  The opportunity to engage in constructive discussion with these various organizations, at the same time, allows us to move forward with our work in an efficient and effective manner,” said Henry Klassen, Chair for the NWC.  “Our goal is to construct a CWRF at Kenney Dam.”

Guests at the meeting were Jason Hwang, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Cory Williamson, Province of British Columbia for the Nechako White Sturgeon Recovery Initiative.
