FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 2, 2003 For Immediate Release Kitimat, B.C. – The April 25 & 26, 2003 meeting of the Nechako Watershed Council (NWC) was opened by the acting Mayor of Kitimat, Graham Anderson. Mr. Anderson welcomed council members and guests and invited everyone to enjoy the hospitality of Kitimat as they celebrate their 50th anniversary. Environmental Dynamics Inc. (EDI) the consulting firm working for the Nechako Enhancement Society (NES), presented their reports and results for the first year of work on the cold water release facility (CWRF) proposed workplan. (The NES was created in 2002 in response to the Nechako Environmental Enhancement Fund Management Committee report released in June 2001). Led by project manager Dave Hamilton, EDI gave an in-depth presentation to NWC members on the Communications Plan, bibliography of reports to date on the Nechako River, a framework for assessment of benefits of a CWRF, and the pre-engineering and environmental studies on the Nechako Canyon and Cheslatta Fan. “The work completed by EDI takes us one step closer to having a CWRF built at Kenney Dam,” said Henry Klassen, Chair for the NWC, “the NWC will be reviewing the reports presented and use these findings to assist with our on going work of creating an optimal flow regime for the Nechako River post-CWRF and overall work of enhancing the long-term health and viability of the Nechako Watershed.” Spokesperson for the District of Kitimat, Trafford Hall and Richard Prokopanko, Director of Corporate Affairs for Alcan Primary Metal Group, British Columbia, in two separate presentations provided the NWC with insight to the economic climate of Kitimat. The NWC welcomed guests Graham Anderson, acting Mayor of Kitimat, Ray Brady, Kitimat, Robert Buckley, Kitimat Chamber of Commerce, Gaetan Pozsgay, Kitimat, Sue Farlinger, Nechako Fisheries Conservation Program, Dave Hamilton, Environmental Dynamics Inc., Mike Robertson, Cheslatta Carrier Nation, Gary Robinson, Robinson Consulting, Dan Rogers, D&M Advertising and Yaroslav Shumuk, UMA Engineering.
